Our apostolic work in Japan is in line with a long-standing Dominican tradition, inherited from the Apostles who were asked by the Lord to go and evangelize all nations.
Saint Dominic dreamed of announcing the Good News to the peoples of Northern Europe.
But what he could not achieve himself, his sons and daughters did, first in the Middle Ages, then later in the 17th century, by sending missionaries not only throughout Europe, but also to America and Asia, including Japan.
Our Canadian province has been active in Japan since 1927, where the brothers are mainly involved in university teaching and working with Christian communities.
The brothers’ only convent is in the Shibuya district of Tokyo. They are also present in Kyoto and Sendai.<\/p>\n

The arrival of Canadian Dominicans in Rwanda and Burundi dates back to 1960.
It was contemporaneous – give or take a few years – with the arrival of French friars in West and Central Africa, Swiss friars in eastern Zaire and American friars in Kenya.
Today, we have a convent in Kigali and a house in Nyagatare in the north-east of the country.
The convent in Kigali is home to the novitiate and a large Christian community, while in Nyagatare, the brothers are involved in university pastoral work, teaching and running a guest house that is set to expand.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Dominican presence in Burundi began unexpectedly in 1973 with the arrival of a Rwandan refugee friar.
Since then, a convent has been built in Bujumbura and the community is expanding.
Plans are underway to build a theology and philosophy studium in the Kanyosha area of the same city, where there is already a church and a large reception hall.
Bujumbura is currently the training ground for young brothers in philosophy, and the involvement of Dominican friars in social issues is certainly an important feature of this community of friars.
Of particular note is the dynamic Christian community that gathers every Sunday at the Bujumbura friars’ St. Thomas-Aquinas Priory, with its famous Saint-Dominique choir.
